  • Reading a slope spirit level – Tips & tricks

To measure the slope using a spirit level, you will need a spirit level, a measuring tape or meter stick, and a fixed reference point.

  1. Place the spirit level on the surface where you want to measure the slope. Ensure that the spirit level is level and not tilted.
  2. Note the position of the bubble in the spirit level.
  3. Use the measuring tape or yardstick to measure the distance between the spirit level and the reference point.
  4. Repeat steps 1 to 3 at various points along the surface to get an accurate picture of the slope.
  5. To calculate the slope, subtract the distance between the spirit level and the reference point at the highest point from the distance at the lowest point. The result is the slope in millimeters per meter or as a percentage. For example, if the distance between the spirit level and the reference point at the highest point is 50 mm and at the lowest point is 20 mm, the slope is (50-20) = 30 mm per meter or 3%.
  6. If you want to measure the slope in degrees, you can use the arctan function. Place the spirit level on the surface and read the angle formed by the bubble. For example, if the angle is 2 degrees, this corresponds to a slope of approximately 3.5%. Note that the accuracy of the spirit level and the reading ability of the user can affect the precision of this method.
  7. There are also special digital spirit levels that can directly display the slope in degrees, millimeters per meter, or percentage. These can be very convenient for quickly and easily determining the slope.

It is important to accurately measure the slope when planning a foundation for a building or road or installing a gutter, for example. Incorrect slope can lead to issues such as water damage or uneven load distribution. Therefore, it is advisable to proceed with caution when measuring the slope and seek professional assistance if necessary.
